Installing Apache Tomcat on Ubuntu

Apache Tomcat is a Java Enterprise Servlet Container that allows you to run and manage web applications. Installation is easy as follows:

  1. Download Apache Tomcat
    http://tomcat.apache.org/download-70.cgi#7.0.29
  2. Choose the tar.gz extension
  3. Extract the downloaded file using the command
    – tar xvfz apache-tomcat-7.0.29.tar.gz

Starting Tomcat Command

change to the tomcat install directory for example, cd /home/username/Downloads/apache-tomcat-7.0.29

run the command:  bin/startup.sh & <hit enter>

open your browser to http://localhost:8080/

Stopping Tomcat Command

run the command: bin/shutdown.sh <hit-enter>
